Mahuta @ Bay of Islands College: 2019

Today is another S.L.J activity. We find out info about Taika Waititi and how he told people where he was form. He used he's pepeha to tell were he was from and today we had to write our pepeha and write were we are from using this app called pepeha website. The easy part was writing my pepeha because I already new were I was from. There was no hard part however the thing I will do next time is read the activity first before doing my own thing. Teaser week activity 1 Monday

This week we are starting to get a taste of what the summer learning journey activities are about and we will have activities every day for the rest of the week. The summer learning journey is about learning, helping you learn and to keep your learning up during the holidays so we do not forget what we learnt at school. Today our activate was ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT and we had to make a profile page about lorde (Ella Yelich-O’Connor). The easy part about this was to find photos of her because I just had to search her name and find pictures off the internet.The hard part was to find info and write it into my own words because we were not allowed to copy and past because that's called plagiarism that means copying peoples work that isn't yours. The thing I need to work on is not to talk to my friends well I'm working. I think that everybody should do the S.L.J. Here is my work.

Legacy of learning

This week my class and I have focusing on legacy of learning and it has been fun. We had 4 different legacy of learning the first one was about leaving a legacy If it is bad or good but we want to leave a good legacy and how a legacy effects people. We also wrote a negative and positive legacy about people and we got to chose those legacy. Our second one was about whakatauki we had to do three whakatauki and write what we think they mean in our own words. Our third one was about writing a letter to the past, we had to chose 1 out of 3 of those whakatauki and write a letter to the person who wrote it and the fourth one was about our personal goals for next year (2020), and what we have been successful in this year. The hard part about this was nothing because it wasn't a hard. The easy part was writing a positive & negative legacy because I had a lot of thoughts about those people and just wrote them down. Ski camp

2 weeks ago the year 7 & 8's went on camp to Mt Ruapehu and it was so fun I wish we could go again. We learnt so many things we learnt how to: ski, stop, and all about the soldiers when we went to the army museum. We had so much fun and I'm sure everyone wants to go again. Here are a few thing we learnt, were we went and what we did.

O te hapai o

This week my class and I have been learning about a new song called O te hapai o. It is a song for the ringawera and it is appropriate for a wedding, tangi, chrisning and more places. The hard part about learning the actions because they were pretty hard and weird. The easy part was leaning the words because they were just so easy to learn. The thing I will do next time is put more time into the actions because I didn’t really know them. Here are the words and it is a Maori song

Problem solving

Today we did problem solving and I had a blast because I learnt hoe to use another way to work out time tables in the hundreds. You also need to to remember the rules which are: work from right to left and other rules. The easy part was solving the equation when I found out how to do it. The hard part was remembering where to put the zeros and other numbers. The thing I will do next time will be to remember to use the rules and work from right to left. Using a colon

This week we have been learning about how to use a colon : in our writing It is very fun because it's very easy to use and I think it is a great way to make a list. The easy part about using it was I could use it like all the time and I new where to put them. The hard part was trying to use it because I couldn't fine a place to put it because I forgot. The thing I will do next time is to use it more often and not to forget it is punctuation and it will get me higher in my rubric ( Punctuation ) Here is an example and what it means (colon).

Colon (punctuation) The colon ( : ) is a punctuation mark consisting of two equally sized dots centered on the same vertical line. A colon precedes an explanation or an enumeration, or list.

First encounter

For the past 3 weeks my group: Tamarah, Josh, Quin,Kody, Honekai and I were learning about Able Tasman and his first encounter with aotearoa and maori. It was very fun because I got to search information about a sailor. The easy part was working together as a team because we were very collaborative. The hard part was writing it in our own words and making more designs for our 3d world which I will talk about soon. The thing I will do next time is make more objects for our 3d world. Our 3d world was about Tasman and Maori blowing the trumpet and putatara. Here is my groups and my work.

Today was the second day of our school holiday blogging and today I choose the free writing activity. The free writing activity is this.

The hard part was what writing genre I was gonna do because there were so many I wanted to do but I only did one and that was a report writing. The easy part was knowing what topic I would do because we had talked about tuna and sense I already new lots about short fins and long fins I decided to do electric eels. The thing I will do next time is try to do two because doing one took me 15min. Anyway here is my writing.

Electric eels

Electric eels has around 6000 kells now.Its scientific name is Electrophorus
electricus and did you know they have been around for thousand of years.

Habitat

During the day eels hide under riverbanks and other things like logs and rocks
because in the daytime people fish. Eels are very hard to find when they are
hiding in there habitat`s.

Behavior

Eels are very shy to came out when there's a big ambush.
The mother eel is very scared like some other eels when their predators come.

Appearance

Eels have poor eyesight so they can't see properly and they are very slimy just like
creepy snakes.

Eels are mammals not just because there delicacy.
They have warm blood inside of there body.
The most famous eel in uk is the moray eel's. Eel's blood is toxic.

Matariki

Last week my school and I had a matariki day it was very cool and fun day. The part that I enjoyed the most was eating the hangi because it was very nice. I also enjoyed prepping the hangi because we got to go to whaea Tonis house. We got to carry wood, stack the wood and got to dig the hole for the hangi. My favorite part about helping was taking photos because it was a easy job. The thing I didn't really like was taking the photos because the people that I was taking photos of kept pulling signs. The job I did like was scrunching up the paper to lit the fire because it was a simple job that I really liked. The hardest job was caring the wood because some of it was very heavy. Shortfin & long fin eels

I am learning how to write and find facts about short fin and long fin eels, I have learnt alot. My school has been doing tuna and takakau, it's basically takakau competition on who can make the best takakau. Tuna is a tuna weigh in competition however we were only allowed to bring short fin eels in to weigh and we did the girth of the tuna. But it is mainly around coming together as a school and also it's a early matariki celebration. The hard part about finding facts was finding information sites because they all had the same information. The easy part was working with others to get the work finished because they are very helpful and they are sensible about there work. The thing I will do next time is find more information to go into my groups work but I think our group work is pretty good I mean it's not the best.

The switcheroo/Narrative

I am learning how to write a narrative piece of writing, I have an understanding of what narrative is. It is a story that is suppose to sound real but it is just a fake story it's not real just like unicorns. The paragraphs for narrative writing goes orientation first, problem arises, problem escalates and resolution. Also we had to use more than 2 pieces of punctuation. But the thing is I only wrote my orientation because I wasn't at school last week when my class wrote the other parts, I was sick. The hard part was knowing what to write because it's like nothing I had done before and because I had never done narrative writing before. The easy part was making my plan, I enjoyed making my plan because it made my writing sound like it was going to be amazing and it was. The thing I will do next time is make sure I write out what was on my plan probably because I changed my writing. My writing was about me and my dog switching bodies, I call it the switcheroo

Here is a piece of my writing.

In a tiny town known as Cliffwood lived a little boy named Cliff who lived with his mum Linda and his small kind dog Rico. Cliff attended Cliffwood primary it wasn't a big school but he had lots of friends. One day Cliff had gotten ready for school it was a normal morning as usual, he opened the door and the wind was pounding onto his entire body. He then left his house "Have a good Day Mum said" "You too mum” Cliff shouted. He then opened the silver gate not knowing the dog was outside playing with his unbreakable ball. Cliff then left to go to school accidentally leaving the gate open. Then on the tip of the dogs eye he saw the gate open and he boosted out the front yard , not knowing what would happen next.

Recount

This week I have been learning how to write a recount for writing it's been fun and also hard because you have to remember the gems which are personification, past tense, punctuation, staccato sentences, simile/metaphors, 5ws/orientation, structure, planning and paragraphs. The easy part about this type of writing was writing about my topic because it was a very cool topic I wrote about, My story was about going down the hydro slides at the waves pools in whangarei. The hard part was remembering to use better vocabulary because I had always forgotten to use better vocab in my writing. The thing I will do next time is to use a different verity of punctuation like ?, !, ( ), '. Here are some photo's of my writing.

Medals Meaning

Today we had whaea tony came in and show us her great grandfathers and her grandfathers metals and we had to the metals they had they had four each. Then we had to pick out of all those 8 and research about what it means and what it means to them. The thing I had learnt about the medal I picked was that it was a medal you get if you, The United Nations Medal (Korea) was awarded for service during the Korean War (1 July 1950 to 27 July 1953) and for service in the first twelve months following the Armistice (up to 27 July 1954). It was manufactured in the language of each country that participated in the United Nations force in Korea. The Sovereign has given approval for New Zealanders, who meet the eligibility criteria, to accept and wear the United Nations Medal (Korea). Here is a picture of the medal I chose.

Haiku poem

For the past week we have been learning about haiku poems its been kinda fun and hard at the same time. There are rules to a haiku poem so there has to be 5 syllables at the top of your poem, 7 in the middle of your poem and 5 syllables at the bottom of your poem not 5 or 7 words but syllables. There is anther rule it can only be about a certaint topic or about felling. The hard part was creating words about my feelings because I was felling lots of emotions. The easy part was writing my haiku poem and making sure it makes sense. The thing I will do next time we do this is to came up with same different or better words for my haiku poem. Structure and language

Today I chose a writing goal and it is for structure and language rubric 4. I am going to re look at it in term 2 week 4 to see if I have made progress. My goal for writing is, I have all of the structure and one part maybe well developed. My next goal for next term will probably be for my vocabulary rubric 5 and if I do well on that it will make me more better at vivid vocab.

Postcards

For the past week we have been writing postcards for other schools in new Zealand we had to use a site called anagram maker it is a very productive site. We also had to get a item from the class and see, feel and smell the object, my object was a bottle ship and I had to make other words that you can make with that word. The easy part was making words because I had used the app anagram. It is a site you can make other words with so you do not have to do it yourself. The hard part was putting the words In a sentence because it had to make sense and had to rhyme if it wanted to. Metaphors

Today we did metaphors about our family. We had to chose animals that represent our family members. The hard part was choosing an animal that relate to my parents and siblings because they have lots of personality. The easy part was knowing what to do because I already knew what metaphors were. Mahutas maths review

Today I did some work on maths the maths was rounding to nearest ten, find 1 tenth and x by 10, 100, 1000. The hard part was the the tenths because I did not know how to do them. I need lots of work on that. The easy part the multiplies because I am very good at them. The thing I will do next time is to work on my tenths, so I can get better and smarter at my learning. Koru art

Last week on Thursday My class and I were doing koru art work. We were only allowed to use Makariri colors which were green, blue and dark blue and the others were wera colors red, yellow and orange. The thing I found challenging was drawing my art work example because I did not know what to draw. The thing I enjoyed was dyeing because I got to use to of my favorite colors. I learnt how to finally draw a koru Because I did not know how to draw it. The thing I will do next time is to color it in nicely. Here is my finished art work.

Worms

This week we have been learning about problem solving. The problem was called worms and it was a blast. We had four blocks and we had to make shapes that worms can make. I had made a systematical table to keep record of my work. However the head of the worm had to be at the top of its body. The hard part was making shapes a worm could make. I came up with 5 ways a worm can move its body. The easy part was adding up all the numbers that a used to make a high number. The thing I will do next time is find more ways a worm can make. Waka Haerenga

Today we ( whole school ) went to Opua for a waka haerenga. Why did we go there because we had to learn about voyaging, hekenukumai busby and his wife Ngahiraka. The boats name was named after Hekenukumai's wife Ngahiraka mai tawhiti. How was it? It was a great experience because I had learnt about voyaging and how to command a waka.
